Nawal El Saadawi

In modern times, when much turmoil and anger exists, there is a sane voice in the crowd. When religion and opposition cause people to hurt each other, it may be time to change the way these people think. Nawal El Saadawi is a revolutionary Egyptian woman who fights for many things. She was born in 1931 in Kafr Tahla and then attended Cairo University. She has been awarded the North-South Prize. She pushes for equality, education, and change in this crazy modern world.

This Egyptian feminist, author, psychiatrist, physician, and sociologist has faced exile, death, and prison time in order to make the world aware of the oppression against women. She states her goal is to strive for equality. She wants women to be equal to men and to feel safe in a world often run by men. She wants to run that world with a bevy of women. She feels that through equality, the world can find peace and happiness.

Nawal El Saadawi also pushes for education. Her lectures, books, and articles aim to shine a light on the bad in the world. She speaks out against oppression in order to educate. It is through education, that a revolution of epic and historical good and change can occur. Some of her books are titled Woman at Point Zero, The Hidden Face of Eve, The Fall of the Imam, and Memoirs of a Woman Doctor. She writes both fiction and nonfiction stories and novels.

Nawal El Saadawi was imprisoned during the reign of Sadat for supposed crimes against the state. Sadat frowned upon her agenda of making women aware of their oppression and also aware of their sexuality. She was imprisoned from 1980 to 1983. She was willing to risk imprisonment in order to push for change in this crazy and at times hateful world. While in prison, she wrote with an eye pencil on tattered pieces of toilet paper. She continues to push for change through her writings and her lectures, even though she has received death threats.

In a world where men want women to be covered and unheard, Nawal El Saadawi fights against oppression and fight for equality. She puts her life on the line in order to make people aware. This feminist, author, psychiatrist, physician, and sociologist will not stop, as long as she is breathing, to push for equality, education, and change in this world.
