INTRODUCTION

Medical marijuana is a term that is given for the use of marijuana or cannabis to be used to treat medical conditions. There is evidence that suggests that marijuana is able to treat many different medical conditions however due to the legalities and the restrictions of marijuana, scientific explorations into the medical usefulness is limited.

HISTORY OF MARIJUANA AND MEDICAL USES

In ancient history, there have been discovered texts that have shown the spread of marijuana use for medical use was widespread. Ancient cultures that have used marijuana for its healing properties include:

  • Ancient Egypt
  • Ancient Greece
  • Ancient India
  • Ancient China
  • Medieval Islam World

The conditions that marijuana used to treat is just a varied as the ancient cultures that used it. Ancient Egyptians used marijuana for treating haemorrhoids, Ancient Greece used it for nose bleed and tapeworms, Ancient India used it for insomnia, headaches and pain relief and Ancient China wrote that it was one of the fundamental herbs in traditional medicine. With so many documented cases, it becomes clear that marijuana must have some properties that are useful for treating some medical conditions today.

MODERN USES OF MARIJUANA IN MEDICENE

Although there is little scientific research into marijuana, there is still much evidence that marijuana has much to offer for the relief of symptoms in many medical conditions today. It is believed that marijuana is able to provide relief for symptoms such as:

  • Pain relief for chronic pain
  • Nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy
  • HIV and AIDS
  • Cancer
  • Dementia
  • Tourette’s
  • Glaucoma

Although there is evidence to suggest the benefits of medical marijuana, the lack of scientific research means that the side effects are not researched well enough to know if the risk outweighs the benefits. Some side effects however are known are seen to include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Hallucinations
  • Memory issues
  • Addiction
  • Schizophrenia
  • Dizziness

The above is just a list of possible short term side effects that are known but further research is needed in order to discover more about the short term and long term side effects of marijuana.

CONCLUSION

There is still much that we do not know about the long term effects of marijuana. More research needs to be carried out on patience in order to carry out a risk assessment of using marijuana to treat some conditions. With further research and legal restrictions being lifted, it is possible to assess the use for medical marijuana and monitor its use in further investigations and potential treatments.
